QA engineer job description template

A job description for a fresher QA engineer in software testing, with an intern version, screening questions and a short exercise that shows whether a candidate thinks like a tester.

In short

A fresher QA engineer’s day is test cases, bug reports and retesting: reading requirements, checking features by hand, logging defects with clear steps and confirming fixes before release. Ask for testing basics, clear writing, simple SQL and an API tool such as Postman. Automation with Selenium or Playwright is good to have unless the role is automation-first.

About the role

[Company name] needs a fresher QA engineer in the [Team] team to test features before they reach users. You will read requirements, write test cases, run them on web or mobile builds and report defects so that developers can reproduce them quickly. A senior tester will teach you our release process, tools and test data. A good fit is someone who notices small details, enjoys finding what breaks and explains it clearly.

What you will do

  • Read user stories and requirements, and raise questions about anything unclear or missing before testing starts
  • Write test scenarios and test cases that cover normal flows, invalid input and boundary values
  • Run test cases by hand on web, mobile or both, and record the results in the team’s test sheet or management tool
  • Log defects in Jira or the team’s tracker with steps to reproduce, expected and actual results, severity, environment and screenshots or logs
  • Retest fixed defects and run smoke, sanity and regression checks before each release
  • Test APIs in Postman by checking status codes, response data and error cases
  • Use SQL queries to check that data is saved, changed or deleted correctly
  • Prepare and maintain test data and test accounts for each environment
  • Join sprint planning, stand-ups and defect triage meetings, and report test status and risks
  • Learn to automate stable checks with Selenium or Playwright, starting with scripts a senior reviews

What we are looking for

  • Understanding of the software testing life cycle and basic terms: test case, test scenario, smoke, sanity, regression, severity and priority
  • Ability to write clear test cases and bug reports in English
  • Basic SQL: SELECT with WHERE and JOIN
  • Awareness of how a web application works (browser, API and database) and use of browser developer tools to see network calls
  • Familiarity with a defect tracker such as Jira, or readiness to learn one in the first week
  • Logical thinking, attention to detail and the patience to repeat checks

Good to have

  • Hands-on practice with Selenium, Playwright or Cypress in Java, Python or JavaScript
  • API testing with Postman and an understanding of REST
  • Knowledge of Agile and Scrum
  • ISTQB Foundation certification, which is optional
  • Mobile testing on real devices or emulators
  • Basic load testing with JMeter

Who can apply

Students and graduates of B.E./B.Tech from any stream, BCA, B.Sc, MCA and M.Sc, and diploma holders in computer or IT can all do well. Testing rewards logic and care more than a specific degree, so candidates from other streams are worth a look if they show testing aptitude.

About the role

[Company name] is offering a QA internship for students who want to learn professional software testing. You will test real features with a mentor, write test cases, log bugs, verify fixes and learn how a team decides that software is ready to release.

What you will do

  • Run existing test cases on the latest build and record the results
  • Log bugs with clear steps, expected and actual results and screenshots
  • Retest fixed bugs and confirm they are closed
  • Write test cases for one small feature and get them reviewed
  • Explore a screen without a script and share what you find
  • Check simple API responses in Postman and compare behaviour across browsers and devices

What we are looking for

  • Studying in any year of a computer, IT or science degree, or a recent graduate
  • A basic idea of how websites and apps work
  • Able to write a bug report that someone else can follow
  • Some SQL, or ready to learn it quickly
  • Available for the whole internship period

Screening questions to add to your job post

  1. Write three test cases for a login page with email and password fields. Shows test thinking. Strong answers go beyond a valid login to empty fields, a wrong password, a badly formed email and repeated failed attempts.
  2. What is the difference between severity and priority? Give a bug with high severity and low priority. Tests triage judgement. For example, a crash in a rarely used admin screen is severe but may not be urgent.
  3. A field accepts an age between 18 and 60. What values would you test? Look for boundary thinking: 17, 18, 19, 59, 60 and 61, plus blank, letters and negative numbers.
  4. A developer says a bug cannot be reproduced. What do you do? Look for teamwork over argument: exact steps, environment, test data and a screen recording or log.
  5. You have one hour before a release. Which tests do you run first? Shows risk-based thinking: smoke tests on the critical flows, then the fixed bugs, then regression around the changed areas.
  6. Choose one tool you have used: a defect tracker, an API client or SQL. Describe one check or report you completed with it. Look for a concrete task, the steps taken and what the result showed. Accept equivalent tools and practice from coursework or personal projects.

What to look for when you shortlist

  • Test cases that include invalid, empty and boundary inputs, not only the happy path
  • Bug reports a developer can act on without a call: steps, expected result, actual result and environment
  • Questions about the requirement before testing, such as what should happen if the user goes back
  • Clear, polite written English; good testers disagree with evidence, not opinion
  • A short exercise in which the candidate identifies reproducible issues, explains their impact and separates defects from questions about unclear requirements
  • Some technical footing, such as SQL, the browser network tab or a small script

Mistakes to avoid in this job description

  • Not saying whether the role is manual, automation or both. Candidates apply blind, so state the split of work and the tools, such as Selenium, Playwright or Postman.
  • Requiring deep programming from a manual testing role, or treating QA as a fallback for people who cannot code. Ask for logic and SQL, list automation as good to have and hire for attention to detail.
  • Making ISTQB a must-have. A certificate shows study, not testing skill, so make it optional and ask for a few sample test cases instead.
  • Skipping a practical exercise. Show a sample login or signup screen and ask the candidate to list tests and bugs; one short session shows more than definitions of test types.

Questions about hiring a QA engineer

What is the difference between a QA engineer and a software tester?

Software testing covers analysing requirements, designing and running tests, and reporting defects. Quality assurance focuses on processes that help prevent defects. Employers may use QA engineer and software tester for overlapping entry-level duties, so list the actual work: requirement reviews, test cases, exploratory testing, defect reports and release checks.

Should a fresher QA engineer know automation?

Manual skills come first: good test cases and clear bug reports. Basic Selenium or Playwright is a bonus unless the role is automation-first. If it is, ask for one programming language and a small framework the candidate has built. Say plainly which kind of role you are offering.

Can a non-IT graduate become a QA engineer?

Yes, if the candidate shows testing aptitude. Give a short test-case exercise and a simple SQL check. A graduate from any stream who does both well can be a better hire than a computer science graduate who only tests the happy path.

Is a QA engineer the same as a quality engineer?

No. In software, a QA engineer tests applications and tracks defects. A quality engineer in manufacturing inspects products and processes against quality standards. Job boards mix the titles, so write software testing in the title or first line. For the manufacturing role, use the quality engineer template.

Do I need a QA engineer, or can developers test their own code?

Developers should write unit tests, but a separate tester looks at the whole flow like a user and spots gaps in the requirements. Even one fresher tester beside a small team can catch problems before customers do, and gives developers more time to build.
